Bicol is an administrative region in the Philippines. As one of the 17 regions in the country, it is arguably the most exciting and holds the most surprises. The geography of the region is considered the reason behind this. Its six provinces are tightly knit, so you can easily hop from one province to another and experience whatever each has to offer. These six provinces are Albay, Camarines Sur, Camarines Norte, Masbate, Catanduanes, Masbate, and Sorsogon. There is also one independent city, Naga city.
You can easily go to any Bicol province by bus or by boat once you've arrived in the region. There are actually many ways of flying in via an airplane. There are airports in many of its provinces, such as Pili Airport in Camarines Sur and the Virac Airport in Catanduanes.
Seeing the Splendor of Bicol
To see the many wonders of the region will take more than a few days' travel. There simply is too much to see, from historic buildings to natural attractions. With that, you have to make a list early on, so you can maximize your vacation.
Its premiere attractions center on eco-tourism. An example is Donsol in Sorsogon, where you can personally encounter whale sharks. In fact, it is considered the world's whale shark capital, based on the most number of the animal's sightings. You can even get to hold them, as they are gentle and harmless. The fauna in this place is also staggering, as there are many endemic species here—plants that can be found only in this province.
You also shouldn't miss getting a spectacular view of the Mayon volcano in Albay. It is visited by tourists all over the world for the perfect cone this volcano bears. In Catanduanes, on the other hand, are hiking trails for the adventurous.
If what you want is some intense mountain climbing and forest trekking, then you should stop at Camarines Norte. As the province nearest to the country's capital, Manila, it can easily be accessed by tourists. You can also encounter in the dense forests of the province the regional tribe of Aetas.
Celebrations, Holy and Thrilling
The many spectacular destinations of Bicol are only matched by its many events. There are celebrations for every kind of person—from the holy to the adventurous ones.
The most number of churches can be found in Camarines Sur, situated at the heart of Bicol. The Catholic churches here are not just visited for their quantity, but also for their beauty. Pilgrimages are held here throughout the year, but the Peñafrancia festival is when pilgrims flock to this province the most. Held every September, it commemorates the patron, Our Lady of Peñafrancia.
At the time of July, the Katalingkasan Festival is celebrated. This is where town fiestas are held simultaneously across all towns in Libon. The highlight of the entire region though is the Bicol Food festival, an annual celebration of good Bicolano taste.
