Centuries ago, this place is called as the Tierra de Camarines. The province is distinctly Spanish-founded settlement. Its name has been derived from “camaronchones” or “camarines”, a Spanish word for “kamalig” referring to a small nipa or bamboo-made huts by the natives.
Camarines Sur (South Camarines) is one of the many provinces in the Philippines. It is located in the Bicol Region in Luzon. Camarines Norte (North Camarines) and Quezon are the province borders to the north, Albay to the south, Catanduanes is the island province that borders to the east across Maqueda Channel. Its capital municipality is the municipality of Pili. In Bicol Region, Camarines Sur is considered as the largest among the six provinces in terms of population and land area. The terrain of this province includes two cities, namely: Naga City, the lone chartered city; and the Iriga City, a component city. Naga City is the province’s and the region’s most progressive city, whether commercially, educationally, financially, and in cultural center, while Iriga City is the center of the Rinconada area. Lake Buhi where the smallest commercially harvested fish can be found, the Sinarapan (Mistichthys luzonensis).
The locals in the Camarines Sur choose Coastal Bikol as their main dialect. Another language used there is the Inland Bikol. Some of the other Bikol languages spoken in the province are Buhi-non, spoken in the town of Buhi and around Lake Buhi; and Rinkoñada(Rinconada Bikol), which is used by most people in Rinconada District of the province specially in Nabua and Iriga City. Most inhabitants understand Tagalog and English dialects. Del Gallego is the only town in the province that has a majority of population that speaks Tagalog.
The inhabitants live their life in agri-based works. Producing rice, corn, feedmeal, freshwater fish, and livestock is their profession. Entrepreneurs engage in trading, often branching out towards neighboring provinces in the south as local demand might be limited, indicated by its mostly 3rd-5th income class municipalities. The land area of the province is 5,266.8 square kilometers that lies at the center of the Bicol Peninsula. Surrounding it are mountains, two of them are known as Mount Isarog and Mount Iriga. In the eastern part of the province lies the mountainous Caramoan Peninsula that faces the island of Catanduanes to the east. The Bicol River drains the central and southern parts of the provice into San Miguel Bay. Mt. Asog is surrounded by three lakes, namely: Buhi, Bato, and Baao.
Still not discovered, but Camarines Sur has many attractions, whether it is natural landmarks or man-made attractions. The Our Lady of Peñafrancia Church in Naga is an example. Also, there are 19th century churches in Goa, San Jose and Sagñay. The two considered dormant volcanoes with trails are the Mt. Isarog and the Mt. Asog. The beaches of Sagñay, Sabang, and Caramoan have coral reefs. Pasacao is known for its beaches, and is called as “The Summer Capital of Camarines Sur.” Naga City is famous for its night life.
