Laoag: A Step Back in Time

Laoag City is definitely one of the well developed cities in the North. But its development did not take away the rich heritage that the city has acquired through its history. This gives its visitors equal chances to reflect and relax as they set foot on this other half of the Ilocos region. Whether they travel by plane or by land, the same great blend of experience is set for the visitors of Laoag.

Replenish your soul

Anyone who wants to take on a pilgrimage will not be disappointed when visiting Laoag. The churches here are not only very old, they are also very unique from each other. St. William's Cathedral is among the biggest churches in the country and the grouped columns that support this edifice are a must-see. Beside the church stands its equally famous Sinking Bell Tower that is believed to be sinking, as it was built on sand, not rocks. There is also the Paoay Church, which is popular for its baroque structure that can withstand an earthquake! This church even made it to the list of UNESCO's World Heritage.

Relax your senses

The 9-hour trip via land will be all the more worth it as soon as you see the white sand of the Pagudpud Beach. This is located at the end north of Laoag which technically gives you a glimpse of the South China Sea already. The sand dunes in Barangay La Paz also offer the same great view of the sea.

A more contemporary way of relaxing in Laoag, but still with the touch of the old times through its Spanish architecture, is provided by the Fort Ilocandia Resort and Hotel. This property is popular not only for its ornate design, but also for its services, which include casino, golf course, restaurants, shops, spa, and a vast swimming pool. Visitors will surely be left with nothing to ask for.

Let your eyes feast over the Malacaņang of the North, which was the official residence of the late President Marcos in Ilocos Norte. The view of the Paoay Lake is undeniably perfect from this residence-turned-museum structure.

Revisit the past

Museums are also abundant in Laoag. The Museo Ilocos Norte is a museum out of a tobacco warehouse, locally known as a tabacalera. Here is where you will see how the Pre-hispanic Ilocano lifestyle was. The Juan Luna Shrine, which was built from the artist's original ancient house, contains the reproduction of prominent paintings like Spoliarium and El Pacto de Sangre. If you are a fan of the Marcoses, you have to check out the Marcos Museum and Mausoleum, where the late president is preserved and elegantly displayed. The museum houses a lot of the late president's collections and archives.

With the modern fast-paced life that people are used to living now, visiting Laoag will surely give you just the right amount of retreat that you need.
