Ola amigo!
I often call Zamboanga City “mini Spain” (something I call Ilocos), because it is one of the most Spanish-influenced part in the Philippines. Despite the strong Spanish influence, its people have taken what they have learned from the Spaniards, localized it and made it their own. Going here is a cultural, and historical experience. You’ll soon learn that the language of the people here, Chabacano, resembles the Spanish language, but is semi-localized.
From its origins to its present state, Zamboanga City has maintained its growth. It’s a city that’s a pleasure to learn, a joy to visit and a treat to interact with. It’s Spanish culture with a twist of things that are uniquely Filipino.
Welcome to Zamboanga City
What makes Zamboanga City beautiful is that, first of all, it is the City of flowers. Imagine, getting lost in the city filled with beautiful flowers. This is no surprise since the Philippines is no stranger to nature’s glory being that it is a tropical country. Here, you can also pay a visit to Pasonanca Aviary and view different kinds of birds. This place is quite an entertaining and educational visit which makes it quite a treat for tourist, both local and foreign alike.
The place is fortunately outside the typhoon belt, but to make the most of your visit, it’s always wise to check the current weather conditions before visiting.
Let’s start with Fort Pillar, which originated way back in June 23, 1635. It’s a short walk from City Hall, NS Valderrosa Street. The present Fort Pillar which we see now was used as a defence from the moros and foreign invaders. The brain of this fort was Father Melchor de Vera, a Jesuit Priest-Engineer. The original thing built in this place before it became a fort was Fuerza de Nuestra Señora del Pilar de Zaragoza with her statue at the entrance. It was later turned to a shrine.
Another place to visit would be the Pettit American Barracks after Colonel James S. Pettit (Inspector General and In-Charge of Civil Affairs of Zamboanga). This was the headquarters of the Americans after they were able to take over the city during their rule in the Philippines. The place is situated near Zambales City Hall which you can choose to visit after since it is a very short walk from the city. Zamboanga City Hall is another former property of the Americans.
Within mini-Spain is a place known to the locals of this place as “Little Baguio”, (7’5 kilometres from the city proper). The place is known as Pasonanca Park. It was beautiful garden which won the number one garden contest in 1959. The place possesses a very clean and serene aura that will surely relax you. It’s surrounded by hills and mountains which adds serenity to the place.
Since Zamboanga City has a very rich historical background, it’s no wonder that there is a lot of cultural activities done up to now. Let’s start with Regatta de Zamboanga. It is a festival of…would you believe- colorful sailboats. This particular celebration takes place throughout the month of October. A race of colorful vintas (boat) is done during this time. What a site it would be! Zamboangue?os are also famous for their song compositions.
The talents of the people of this nation branch out to culinary arts. In Zamboanga City, there is also very tasty sea food that you can indulge in during your stay. Since the place is close to the sea, sea food is a known specialty of this province. With Spanish dishes as the speciality of the place, arroz valenciana, callos de andalucia, pochero are some of the main meals that are served in the place. The cuisine of the place, though, is not limited to Spanish plates. Other dishes include. The range of their dishes include- Chinese, Islamic, Japanese, other Asian as well as American. The restaurants are fairly accessible too, so while you’re here you’re sure to never go hungry!
For a little rest and recuperation:
La Vista Del Mar, a very pleasant beach resort to visit. It would probably be a good idea to book in a resort of your choice so that after a fun-filled day of activity, you’ll be able to relax and watch a beautiful sunset or a dramatic sunrise that’s not usually that visible in the city.
Maybe in your visit you can even learn a few Chabacano terms. It’s always nice to learn a bit of the people’s language in order to get to know a certain people a little bit more.
Come sail at Zambaonga City, and experience a truly unique city, located in Mindanao. This requires a plane ride from Manila. But for sure, it will be worth the trip. It’s another side of the Filipinos, but for sure, common values like hospitality and warmth, will bring a glow to your heart during and days after your visit.
